Trailer: Countdown to Machine Consciousness

Countdown to Machine Consciousness is a weekly Friday synthesis of credible developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, and computing—and what they imply about the possible emergence of conscious, embodied machine intelligence and its societal consequences.

A great deal of AI commentary swings between two moods: hype and alarm. Both tend to flatten what is actually happening. Hype treats capability as destiny. Alarm treats capability as threat. Neither is sufficient. The question that matters is not simply what systems can do today, but what they are becoming—and how quickly they are moving from tools at the edge of life into participants within it.

This project is philosophically inclined by design. Technical developments are treated as inputs to larger questions: agency, moral status, governance, responsibility, stewardship, and what “human” means in a world that may include non-human minds. Along the way, I will engage with influential arguments from across technology, science, government, and culture, and with major books that attempt to frame AI’s societal impacts—optimistic, skeptical, and critical.

I am not interested in spectacle. I am interested in trajectories. Each week I will look for signals that matter across five converging fronts:

  • AI architecture and capability
  • Compute and infrastructure
  • Robotics and embodiment
  • Safety, governance, and strategy
  • Societal and philosophical implications

The purpose is not to claim certainty. The purpose is to make the reasoning visible: what is being claimed, what supports it, and what it implies if true.

New episodes will appear weekly on Fridays on the Episodes page.
